Restrictions on Holding Catholic Funerals

When a loved one returns home to the Lord, the Catholic funeral services are a way to offer comfort to the mourners and prayers for the decedent. Families will need to coordinate the date of the funeral service in San Jose with the Church’s calendar of holy days. Catholic funerals may not be held on Sundays in the Diocese of San Jose. However, it is up to the individual Parish to allow funeral services on Sundays.

Families may choose to hold the funeral service on Ash Wednesday, although the church would not distribute ashes during the service. The other restrictions on funeral arrangements include prohibiting services from being held on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday, and other Holy Days of Obligation.
